Giants rally in 10th to stun Padres

Baseball Betting Lines

06/01/2008 - San Francisco, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jose Castillo's infield single, helped by a fielding gaffe, capped a three-run bottom of the 10th inning, as the San Francisco Giants defeated the San Diego Padres, 4-3, to avoid a three-game sweep.

Fred Lewis had a pinch-hit triple off the right field wall in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game and Tim Lincecum threw seven-plus strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits for the Giants, who have won seven of their last 11 games.

Alex Hinshaw (1-0) picked up his first major league win despite giving up a two-run homer to Adrian Gonzalez in the top of the 10th.

Randy Wolf lasted six innings, also allowing one run on four hits in what was a pitchers' duel for the first nine innings. Trevor Hoffman (0-4) absorbed the loss for San Diego, allowing three runs on four hits in just a third of an inning. The loss snapped a season-long three game win streak for San Diego.

Jody Gerut singled to start the top of the 10th, and with two outs, Gonzalez took a Hinshaw pitch to straightaway center for his 16th homer of the season.

The Giants responded in the bottom of the 10th with singles by Ray Durham and Brian Horwitz to begin the inning. Omar Vizquel put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position for Lewis, who took a Hoffman pitch off the top of the right field wall for a triple to tie the game again.

Hoffman intentionally walked Randy Winn to get to Castillo with men on the corners. Castillo hit a grounder to Edgar Gonzalez at shortstop. Gonzalez fielded the ball cleanly but froze, looking to throw home before realizing he needed to turn a double-play to extend the game. Instead, the ball remained in his glove as Lewis scored the winning run.

Each team registered three singles in the first five innings with only the Padres advancing a runner into scoring position in that span.

Paul McAnulty walked to begin the third and advanced to second on a Wolf sacrifice bunt. But Lincecum got Gerut and Tadahito Iguchi both to fly out to end the inning.

Aaron Rowand walked to begin the bottom of the fourth but was caught stealing second for the first out of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, Rowand got his revenge with a two-out homer to break the ice.

In the eighth the Padres had men on first and second with no outs after a Gerut walk and an Iguchi single to chase Lincecum from the game. Jack Taschner came in and struck out Brian Giles before allowing a double-steal and intentionally walking Adrian Gonzalez to load the bases.

Taschner was relieved by Tyler Walker, who walked Kevin Kouzmanoff to force Gerut home and tie the game. A Michael Barrett ground ball double-play got San Francisco out of the jam.

Game Notes

San Diego announced on Sunday that Mark Prior will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery this coming week...Adrian Gonzalez's homer was his fifth in his last 11 games...San Francisco snapped a seven-game home losing streak and avoided being swept for a fifth time this season...Iguchi has not committed an error this season.

Big 12 Conference betting odds

Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.

Work left to do:

Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.

Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.

Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.

Matt Kenseth And Kevin Harvick Favorites To Take NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship

(September 15)—The NASCAR season has hit the homestretch with the opening event on this year’s Chase for the Cup taking place this weekend at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. With 10 races remaining to determine the Cup Series champion, leading online sportsbook MySportsbook.com today announced odds on all 10 Chase qualifying drivers capturing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

One of the largest sportsbook sites on the Internet, MySportsbook.com currently lists the top two drivers in the point standings as the early favorites to win the Nextel Cup. Entering the Chase for the Cup with a slim five-point lead in the point standings, 2003 NASCAR champ Matt Kenseth has been made a slight favorite to win his second Cup at 7/2 betting odds. 2001 Cup Rookie of the Year Kevin Harvick has betting odds listed at 5/2 and four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon is listed at 6/1 to capture the Nextel Cup this year.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his legendary father who won six NASCAR titles, Dale Earnhardt Jr. stands at 8/1 to breakthrough with his first Cup victory. Staying with the family theme, MySportsbook.com lists 2005 Rookie of the Year Kyle Busch at 14/1 to succeed big brother Kurt’s 2004 NASCAR title. While Kasey Kahne was the final driver to qualify for the Chase with a third place finish last week, the oddsmakers give him a fighting chance at 10/1 mainly due to several mile-and-a-half tracks remaining on the schedule. Despite going winless on the NASCAR circuit this season, Jeff Burton enters the Chase at 5/1 to capture the Cup title. Meanwhile, rookie Denny Hamlin is 4/1 to win the championship, while veteran driver Mark Martin enters the Chase for the Cup as a 15/1 long shot to win his first NASCAR title in his 24th and final season.

MySportsbook.com will offer comprehensive Nascar betting lines on every race remaining on the Nextel Cup series including driver match-ups, props and odds to win each race. For a complete list of NASCAR odds, please visit www.MySportsbook.com.
